I bought my MkIIG model new in March and while listening to it tonight, the audio died. It has always been indoors and in an area that allowed air to circulate around it. Has anyone else lost the audio in the "G"? It certainly surprised me that it happened.

touch the radio, if you can still hold your hand there, then this will not help;
MY IC706m2g, out of the box new, would shut the audio off for no reason, the lights stayed on, and the radio was too hot to touch.
The repair ticket said that they found a cold solder joint.
I understand that there is a now a service bulletin about audio problems and ground springs.

Since it is less than a year old, I would just send it back to Icom (or wherever you bought it) for warranty repairs. I have had a 706MkIIg since they came out in about 1998 or 99 and have had no problems with it.

Frank,
I second Tom, KR4BD's advice. If the radio is still in warranty let them repair it. Attempting to perform any of the repairs yourself could leave you responsible for some expensive repair costs. I had a 706MK2 for several years and now own a 706MK2G for over a year without any problems. The radios are left on for almost 24/7.

Have you checked the squelch setting? I have changed bands going from VHF to HF and forgot to reset the RF Gain/Squelch level. First indication is no audio. And then *&^% I forgot to reset the knob.
But it that's not it, then by all means return it for repair. I've had my for several years with no problem - except, of course, that knob every now and then.

I agree about the warranty repair. I have just bought an original 706, and its fantastic. The only thing I had to do was to switch off the squelch so the I could use the RF gain as purely and RF gain. I guess the last owner had used it mainly for 2 Mtrs as his memories were all in that band. Once I'd done that, the improvement on HF was brilliant.
Some of these new radios have been reported with loose grounding on some of the boards, which would make sense if the boards heated, expanded, and lost ground. But I'm envious. The moment I can afford to upgrade, I will.

Get it repaired under warrany. That support is part of what you paid for when you bought it.

My how time flies when you are having fun. The sales receipt said I bought a year ago March!! I checked all the usual stuff and took it in for repair. The audio goes out after about 1 minute on. Then it has to cool before the audio will return. This is my 3rd in the 706 series and I have a 703 as well. I really do like these radios. I think when it comes back I will do the "fan mod". Thanks for all the replies.

Well, I got a call today. The radio is working again and has been all night. What was done? NOTHING!! The tech removed the boards just to give them an "eyeball" check. A small piece of solder fell out and the boards seemed to be a little loose. The tech put all the boards back and made sure all was secure and the ribbon tapes were tight and then turned the sucker on. It worked! And worked all night and thru the morning until I picked it up.
I brought it home and did the fan mod and checked the radio against Icom's memo #928 about instability on 15 & 17 meters. On this unit, that was already done at the factory but I added the extra ground anyway. It plays just fine. Maybe the loose boards, maybe the loose solder. I never have opened the radio before now and I did move it around Sunday evening and it went bad. The cost? Nada. The tech felt bad since I had my MkII and the 703 in for repairs in the past year. He took pity on me and asked boss to let it go out the door free. Thats my story and the radio works!

Frank
