What is your budget?

How old a radio would you mind having?

How much space do you have?

Can you supply 13.8V DC for the radio?

What sort of antenna(s) do you plan to use?

Since there are literally hundreds of radios to suggest, having more information about your needs or wants would be helpful.

Steve . .

Thank you for the quick reply . . .age is not a big deal . . would like to stay in the $500+/-more bang for the buck bracket if possible.

Presently on dockside 120v power and I have solar cells for charging and a 120v/12 batt charger and onboard engine alternator. . Four type 27s plus 2 more for starting.

I have a Knwd TS440sAT/Pwrsup. on board also just unboxed a FT-101ZD with remote VFO and speaker and MIc. Which has been in storage since 1997 and still works.

Space is limited . . .recently built a home made vertical from sunfish masts. But many vertical sticks closebye. Working on a Delta or diamond loop.

Nice Qsl card form a light house buff. XK2LHD

Thanks . .

Ten-Tec

I have a TS-450 in the shack. Good general-purpose rig.
When I want to listen to weak CW signals, my old Ten-Tec
Argosy runs rings around it. Look for something like a
Delta, Corsair, or Omni with an analog VFO for minimum
phase noise.

"age is not a big deal"

That's good, I am getting older, fast! ;-)

"would like to stay in the $500+/-more bang for the buck bracket if possible"

for a CW rig in that price range that has a premium receiver, look at the peformace comparison charts at

http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm

"Presently on dockside 120v power and I have solar cells for charging and a 120v/12 batt charger and onboard engine alternator. . Four type 27s plus 2 more for starting."

I also use several type 27 and some larger, with various charging methods.

"I have a Knwd TS440sAT/Pwrsup. on board also just unboxed a FT-101ZD with remote VFO and speaker and MIc. Which has been in storage since 1997 and still works."

If you already have the TS-440 I can only assume you want a higher performance radio, because the one you have is already a good selection. The FT-101 is also a workhorse, but gobbles space, power, and makes heat ... with middling performance partly due to the vintage. Nice, though, and a good conversation piece if you can sapre the room.

"Space is limited . . .recently built a home made vertical from sunfish masts. But many vertical sticks closebye. Working on a Delta or diamond loop."

Well, ok, sounds like you know the ropes pretty well. Are you planning on operating mostly daytime, and, do you plan on keeping the Kenwood or the Yaesu, or trading those in?

Ten Tec has the cw units of choice; if you call their factory, they sometime have used rigs for sale they took in trade.

Tom - take a look at the FT-900 from Yaesu. It was designed to be a mobile rig, but the receive performance is excellent and it was a relatively problem-free transceiver. You can get a separation kit, enabling you to separate the front panel from the main unit. I used one for quite some time on CW, chasing DX, and a friend of mine still uses one for 160 DXing. I've seen them recently from $550 to $650, sometimes with the separation kit (cable). 100W output on all modes.
