This is an post to ask for assistance in troubleshooting and/or tuning a KENWOOD TS-830S. I have a unit that was donated to our club and I am trying to see if all of the functions are working correctly. The transceiver receives great on all bands but I can't get it to transmit.

I have tried to follow the Kenwood procedure for this transceiver but so far, no output. I am getting about 40-50mA of bias current but when I place it in either TUNE or CW mode, there is no Drive registering on the meter when I press my key. I am not sure if there is a problem with the finals or if the driver has gone soft. One thing I did notice is that the bias current is very unstable and bounces around. I was pointed to the Kenwood TS-830 Survival Guide by Olaf Rettkowski, DL9AI. It was that guide that got me thinking that the problem might be in the driver tube.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have the same radio and I really enjoy it.

this is a great site with some instructions on how to determine your tube condition.

There is a switch on the back of the radio under the fan. This should be on,If it is off it will not transmit.

Start with "CAR" (outside knob of mic and car pot)fully ccw, press key and slowly advance (turn cw) car pot while monitoring Ip. Current should increase. Rotate "Drive" back and forth which should peak Ip current. If Ip increases then you should be able to tune rig according to directions given on the web site recommended. Otherwise use an external receiver or transceiver to monitor the frequency you are set for. You should be able to hear a weak carrier even if the finals are dead. If not then you will have to troubleshoot and repair. The first thing to try is a known good driver tube. Another common problem with TS-830's is a dirty or broken bandswitch.
Your best bet since you seem unfamilar with troubleshooting is to get help from a local ham more knowledgable with the TS-830.

Try posing your question to:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TS-520_820_530_830/

You may have to join the group, but it can be a real time & money saver. The group is moderated by Bill, N0ZL of B&B Technical Services. For my money (and I have sent some his way!) he's quite the TS830S guru and is usually quite willing to help through the group or through an email.

I always started my tune up on these older tube final radios with it set to a place in the band with just hiss, then tuned for loudest hiss on all controls, ( preset, drive load etc) and this would always be close to ending tune point.

also does this have the need for a jumper on a rear octal socket ( bypass the vfo filimnts) on the back..

good luck
