Yaesu FT-747 help Reply
by CAPTAYANNIS on November 16, 2006 Mail this to a friend!
Hi,
I have been give a Yaesu FT-747 to repair, apparently Tx was keyed with no antenna or load connected. Before I start looking at schematics and poking around I thought I'd try the lazy option and ask if anyone has had a similar fault and can give me some idea of where to start. The set receives ok but shows no output power on a test set.

Thanks

Check the PA transistors for shorts or burns. That's where I always start.

The PA deck on the FT-747 is in the self contained aluminum enclosure on the left hand side of the radio.
More than likely the PA transistors are bad. If you put another receiver close to the FT-747 and couple the receivers antenna to the FT-747's PA area with a short wire, see if you can hear yourself in the receiver. If so then most likely the finals are shot. The PA section is small, and a tight working area, so be careful when lifting the legs of the finals to check them out of circuit.
Good Luck and 73's
