I don't understand the question. How are the requirements for a ham equipment desk different than the requirements for a generic workbench, desk or table?

You don't need to buy one unless you want total perfection. I built mine out of 3/4 in plywood. I think it took a sheet and a half. I used nothing more than a circular saw and a sander and lots of elbow grease. Originally I built it with one upper shelf. Later I upgraded it to include 2 more shelves as my station grew. I would not trade it for a brand new factory desk. It suits my needs just fine. I have 2 compartments with doors for junk to be kept in. I think I built it in a Saturday and painted it on the following day. I did use formica on the top to make it easy to write on. Formica is easy to install. I suggest that you measure the place that you can put the desk and put pencil to paper and come up with your own design. It is not that difficult or I could not have done it HI HI! Good luck, Bruce/NU0R

take a look here, they have been made for me by friends, everything from a door and a filing cabinet on one end and a cleat on the wall for the other end, to being made from 10 foot melamine counter tops to connstruction from plywood and floor tile as a desk surface look at the pics here

I've used the flat house door with 2 cheap filing cabinets and the preformed formica coutertops on top of filing cabinets. Both serve the purpose and can look quite professional. You can build shelving on top with the melamine covered shelving and angle brackets.

Two two-drawer filing cabinets and a cheap door. If you need a diagram let me know.

My experience is for an operating table to be really comfortable it needs about 39" of depth. That gives enough room for the rigs and some space behind to allow for cable routing and to be able to get at plugs and such and enough room for a keyboard paddles etc in front of you without feeling cramped. Now with the advent of a lot of computer integration into my station also planning for multiple computer monitors and ease of addressing them has become a big consideration. If you add shelves, you will want them to be high enough to accommodate your monitors.

I went to a place that recycles business furniture and picked up a computer table that is shaped to fit into a corner.
The surface is very durable to work on too.
I added a drawer to it using a kit from the hardware store.
Lots of cable penetrations in it and very deep as it was designed to sit in a corner.
At the time I got it for $15.

You don't need anything fancy, but it has to be capable of holding a couple of hundred pounds. For years I used a banquet table with folding legs..you can buy them for under $100 at Staples or Office Depot. I've even used a wooden door mounted on two saw horses. Currently I use a an office table that I purchased from Office Depot for about $300...it's 80 inches wide and 36 inches deep.
