Hi everyone im a dot scales officer and im wanting to build a inverted v antenna for our base radio. we have a 150' tower, what im wanting to do is toss a spool or rope as far up the tower as i can get it and pull my center up and tac the legs in a v away from the tower. since the tower is metal and grounded will it cause a problem? this is a 11 meter antenna im wanting to construct.

As long as none of the antenna wire touches the tower, you should not have any major problems.

Will the DOT have a problem with you erecting a CB antenna on their tower? State agencies can be pickey about these things.

"this is a 11 meter antenna im wanting to construct. "
Everyone you want to contact is going to be using a vertically polarized antenna, and so you also have to do so.
You probably want to build a groundplane or something.

And, to further clarify my post, my experience with state agencies has been that they prefer commercially produced antennas (even CB) with published specifications. Plus, a home made antenna, cross polarized from those you are trying to communicate with (mobiles) doesn't sound too exciting.
I think I'd just buy a rugged, but not too expensive, commercial (vertically polarized) CB antenna if I were the DOT.
Good luck.

An inverted V would be a poor choice for CB.
ANY base CB antenna would outperform it by a country mile.

EKT is right....
An inverted V for CB would be workable of course.
But a poor choice in the long run unless you constructed a long wire inverted v antenna for the CB band--at least 3 odd lengths of quarter waves (the number of quarter waves on each leg must be of an odd nunber 3, 5, 7, 9,... this will give you a little gain.
But even that would be a less than good choice.
Might I suggest you obtain something like say a commercial half wave vertical that does not require a ground plane.
And of course before you put the system into service check to make sure that the signal from the CB does not interfere with the primary radio systems.

Since this will be located at a DOT weigh station I have a hunch the intent is for short range contacts.
With that in mind, a modest CB vertical mounted 18' above ground would be more than adequate. If this needs to be a near-zero budget install, consider a dipole strung as a sloper. Less directional than a Vee and should put out a big signal in the parking lot.

You could always cheat and buy an amp!!! Just tell the state it's "a power supply"!! Hi Hi. Only, it's a power supply to the antenna!!!

the magic number for a cb dipole is 8 feet 6 inches on each side of the center. you could mount it verticle. bring the coax away at 90 degrees to the dipole.
