You're asking a question that has a very, very long answer.
There are several kinds of software you could be using, depending on what you want to do:
1. Contact-logging software.
2. Rig-control software -- "Ham Radio Deluxe" is a good example -- which lets you control your rig from your computer.
3. Digital-mode software -- Digipan (for PSK31), DM780 (a part of Ham Radio Deluxe), FlDigi -- which lets your use your computer soundcard to decode and encode digital data (text, and pictures) and receive and send them using your rig.
4. "Rig Programming" software, which lets you retrieve, modify, and load the rig's memory settings.
I'll leave the details of computer-to-rig connections to somebody who knows the FT-847. _Most_ rigs allow two kinds connections to the computer:
a. Two audio connections -- "receive" and "transmit" -- that go into the computer's soundcard.
b. A digital connection (often called a 'CAT cable') for reading and setting the rig's settings from the computer.

Hi Daniel:
Don't know if this will help you, but here is a link for FAQ on the 847.
http://www.supercontrol.de/cat/ft847faq/ft847faq.htm
Lots of info, some of the links off the page our out of date but still lots of good info..
Also is your 847 a newer model? Some of the early ones only have one way CAT control. (Won't read from radio) There was a firmware upgrade for this and most radios have been upgraded.
