Hi: It depends - I have had fairly good results with a quality "on glass" 2M/440 antenna mounted on the windshield just below the rear view mirror.

A "gutter mount" can be adapted to attach to the rear door, although this isn't the greatest mount in the world by any means.

The best mount I have seen for an HF antenna is a bar across the rear of the van with a 45 degree extension that comes out from the bumper far enough over so the antenna can clear the rear door.

However, the best all around solution was to get the XYL interested in ham radio. She no longer gripes about drilling holes in her wheels.

I have a Ford Aerostar and I just installed a Comet SSB5 using their heavy duty RS-730 trunk/hatch mount and (16') CK-3M5 cable assy. I mounted it in the center on the top lip of the rear (top hinge) door. Even there it isn't TOO tall (38") that I have to worry about scraping it off. It was the only setup I could find like this and I'm glad I ignored the 'Comet naysayers'... while it wasn't exactly cheap it hits repeaters 100+ miles away. FB & highly recommended solution
