Alinco DX70 Noise Question Reply
by N0AH on August 20, 2002 Mail this to a friend!
NB does not work for iginition noise with engine on. Disconnecting the antenna, the noise goes away- So the powerline is clear- It's coming in off the antenna like the Alinco Factory Rep thougt and claimed nothing can be done and I should return the radio- Claims they had many problems with this rig becuas ehte NB sucks basically- Anyone know how to cure this with the noise coming in from the antenna???

Just because a noise blanker doesn't eliminate the ignition noise in your car doesn't mean it's not working. Certainly some noise blankers are more effective than others with different types of pulse interference, but it's not a magic button. Sounds to me like you need to investigate and reduce the source of the interference before sending the radio off for repair. I suspect that when the radio returned the noise will still be just as bad, and the noise blanker just as ineffective. Noise has long been the nemesis of HF mobile, and it's rare to just slap an HF rig in a car and not have an issue or two.

The noise blanker in the DX70 is not very effective in my experience. But the - very - effective noise blanker in my FT1000MP causes distortion of the audio which seriously affects readability..... So, the best thing is to eliminate the noise so you will not need a nb.
Apart from the nb, the DX70 is a great radio for its size and money (IMHO)

I own 2 DX70T's and have read several articles on
the noise blankers, all of which said the NB was not
very good. The ARRL lab test article is very good and
said that Alinco was willing to work with the customer
on a case by case context regarding NB problems but
they were not planning any re-design of it. I have
never found a perfect NB yet, although Yaesu has been
the best with the FT-100 I had. The best noise remedy
for the DX70's I have found is an AMCOMM clear speech
external speaker. The DX70 is a good little rig, and
much cheaper than the Kenwood TS50. No one else makes
an HF only mobile anymore and I don't like all in one
rigs, because if it breaks, you lose everything while
its in the shop if its yor only rig, and you can't
monitor VHF/UHF while using HF. Anyone from YAECOMM
reading this??...HI HI 73's KD7EFQ

Your Alinco is not alone when it comes to poor NB performance. What's worse, it just ruins the front end dynamics. But your question was, how do I get rid of the noise.

Is it really ignition, of maybe fuel injectors, or fuel pump, and maybe a few more things. If you do a search on the Mobile Forum of this web site, you'll find a myriad of information on how to control and/or eliminate all sorts of noise from your mobile.

You may e-mail me with more information (type of vehicle, model, engine, etc.), and I'll be happy to give you a few pointers.
