Antenna Modeling EZNEC Reply
by 1QAZ2WSX on August 20, 2002 Mail this to a friend!
Hi,

I've been tinkering around with the EZNEC antenna modeling program in hopes to come up with a small homebrewed omnidirectional antenna suitable for the 2.4 - 2.5 Ghz range.

I modeled a vert monopole that is only 88mm tall made of 1.5mm solid copper wire. To be honest I'm not sure I modeled it correctly because it shows to have a whopping +20 dBi gain and a beamwidth of almost 60 degrees. The 3d plume looks good and the 2d elevation map shows only a 3 dBi drop between 6 degrees and 68 degrees all the way around in a 360 degree circle.

My problem is I've not actually built this so I don't know if they modeling is true. I would be more than happy to upload the model info if someone could look at it and let me know if or where I made a mistake. Just seems like a lot of power for a 3 inch copper wire.

If I did model it correctly and these numbers are fairly close then I'm also wondering if someone would mind looking at the 2d and 3d model to see if this is as good a omni as my untrained eyes seem to indicate.

I have a web page I can upload the file for EZNEC if anyone can look at it for me.

Thanks in advance

What refferrence did you use to come up with your gain figure? I model HF wires with EZNEC and I like to use a 1/2 wave dipole at 1/2 wave above ground as my refferrence point for gain. I use this for all type HF antennas and I get comparable results with other published data for gain factor. The value I use in the "Ref Level" field is 7.3dBi. Try that and see if it makes sense for the bands that you are designing for. Also, I use the "Real/MININEC" ground setting.
If you want to email me your .EZ file, I can look at it and get back to you at a later date.
Griff.
