Can the Membrain keypad be replaced? It's the one thing that bothers me about this old radio I recently purchased from, you guessed it, ebay! I reomove the mods as I like my equipment to be factory, Is the keypad still available?

Hello,

I'm not sure if you can still buy replacement membrane keypads for the Radio Shack PRO-2004 scanner or not. I know the scanner is actually made by GRE of Japan, which has made some of the best darn scanners I know of. I had a PRO-2004 a while back that had a "sticky" membrane and wanted to replace the entire pad, but I could never determine where to buy one if one was even still made at that time. I contacted Radio Shack about it, but unless you have an SKU or catalog number they can't do a damn thing for you. The limited checking they were able to do turned up absolutely nothing. After checking everywhere I could think of on the internet I couldn't turn up anything either. I even tried looking up the original manufacturer (GRE of Japan), but couldn't locate what I was looking for there either. The PRO-2004 went out of production such a long time ago I sincerely doubt you'll have any luck finding a replacement membrane keypad for your PRO-2004. The only exception would be if you found a dead 2004 with the keypad still intact. Then it might be cost-effective to replace it. Otherwise, I would say to just replace the whole scanner with an other used one :(

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but that's what I turned up when it happened to me :(

Good luck, and 73!

Thanks Randy:
I guess I am lucky that it still works. Actually it works extremly well, It just looks beat because some guy did every mod know to mankind and it took an entire evening to remove them all. I cringe to think someone took a drill to this fine piece of gear at one time. I have a mint pro 2022 which looks and works like a jewel. I wanted a 2004 too as like the 2022, they look good, are very dependable and user friendly. I had a 2006 that I thought was hard to use with a flat face. So, like the short sighted nut I am, I sold it. The display was hard to see at most angles. Oh well, next stop for me if this unit dies will be radio shack for a new Uniden radio. I will also try to find a dead 2004 for parts as you have suggested. 73's Randy and thanks for the info.
