i use a long wire for transmission on all hf bands with a tuner. My wire antenna is end fed, and i use a good earth system (a few odd lengths of wire buried in the garden. Obviously, this will not work as well as a beam etc etc, but I have had numerous dx contacts particularly on the lower hf bands.

Back in the late 70's my station consisted of a Drake TR-4CW (about 200 watts out) to a 265 foot wire up 10 to 15 feet. The ground was a wire run out the window and attached to the wall of our house trailer. On 10 meters, I had RF in the shack and just ran a radial wire (1/4 wave long) from the tuner out the wall and on the ground.
Oh, the tuner - didn't have much money (16-year olds usually don't), the "tuner" was a roller inductor and variable capacitor I got at the local hamfest, mounted on a board.
THe wire was pointed toward europe and, on 10 or 15 meters, I almost could'nt talk anywhere but europe!
So, to answer your question: "Yes."

Most emphatically YES!
My outside antenna is nothing more than 125 ft +/- of 22 gauge insulated bell wire, from the local Radio Shack, strung out of a 2nd story, back bedroom window and hung over a tree limb with half wave bell wire counterpoises running around the walls of the bedroom. These are connected to the rig thru an MFJ antenna tuner, which has allowed me to work on all bands, 160 to 6 meters. I will admit I haven't had much luck with 6 meters, although I did work a Texas station on SSB one night (and have the QSL).
I've been forunate enough to have worked 106 countries and all 50 states (where are those QSL cards every one????) with 100 watts or less.
A drawing of of my antenna "system" can be found in the Files section of the "Live Wires" group on Yahoo.com
