Computer monitors LCD vs. CRT, which is better for Reply
by VE6SZR on March 3, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
With the advent of newer flat panel LCD computer monitors, I was wondering if someone had experience as to whether they caused (or where susceptible) to more/less EMI/RFI than the older CRT monitor technology.

I am considering the purchase of the newer LCD type and would appreciate opinions in this regard.

For example, CRT type monitors have caused aditional noise on 6m (Yaesu FT-817) which I managed to solve by changing to a different resolution.

Thank you in advance.

My old CRT caused some minor problems in the shack. My new Macintosh 17 in. studio display is totally quiet.

The CRT in my shack generated a signal / noise about every 34kh. On some bands it was more pronounced than others. At time it would reach an S5 or highr level.

In December I bought a Samsung SyncMaster 151v LCD..not only is the interference gone, but much better display.

I recently switched from 16" CRT to 18" LCD in my digital shack. My opinion is that a modern LCD flat panel is better than CRT in all cases except the price ;-)

The LCD displays are the wave of the future. Although they are more expensive, remember, they use less power, and by the time you get to a 19" monitor, you practically need a crane to lift them, and a really sturdy desk to support them. And an 18" LCD would be the equivalent of a 19" CRT, if you read the fine print about "viewable size."
