Hi all, I've bought my first rig and I'm looking forward to my first QSO soon.
I did a lot of research on the Kenwood TH 79A and found one used from a store that I was able to order it from.
Any bugs, quirks that I should be wary of on this model?

My first radio was a TH-79A. I had my first QSO using it on our local repeater. It gave me 3 years of excellent service. I then passed it on to my son when he was licensed a couple of years ago. It's still his favorite HT.
It's been the least quirky of all the HTs I've owned. If you didn't get the manual, you can download a copy from the Kenwood web site (www.kenwood.net). Also, take a look at the service bulletins, etc., that Kenwood has posted. One of them, for instance, will tell you how to use the TH-79 as crossband repeater.
Welcome to ham radio. I may not be able to work you on 2 m or 450 MHz, but I hope the catch on HF one of these days!

You've made a fine choice. This was the first HT I've ever bought, and I'd never give it up. After playing with just about every other HT on the market, not a single one works as well and is as easy to use as this one.
As far as hints, I'd just suggest you read the manual. Everything you'll need to know is in there. While you're waiting for it to arrive, read over the manual once (before it comes) so you'll get an idea of what to expect.
This HT has many, many features. Don't expect to learn (or even understand) them all in your first day. Eventually, though, they'll make sense, and you'll appreciate them being there.
The only key command that I know of, that isn't listed in the manual, is
Func+Lamp
which causes the backlight to say on until you press Func+Lamp again. Other than that, everything you'll need to know is in the very well written manual.
This rig can also do many things with a few modifications. Mine receives and transmitts (not that I would know, but...) from 118-174, 300-399, and 400-490. Others have been able to get it to go down to around 60 or 80 mhz! Mine has a menu option to select between AM and FM modes, but I'm not sure when or how it works.
Good luck, and if you have any more specific questions about this rig, drop me an email!
