Any one know where I can find info on how to make the meter read peak? There used to be a kit available , but I don't find it listed any more.

I didn't call Bird on this, but they still list the model 43P in their 2002 catalog, and that's the "PEP" version of the model 43. The only difference is a printed circuit board and two 9v batteries, and there always was a conversion kit available.

You might want to contact one of Bird's distributors (since they don't sell direct, anyway) and simply ask them. RF Parts here in southern CA is a Bird distributor, and has a toll-free number 1-800-737-2787....

I've often wondered:
Isn't a PEP reading wattmeter kind of an ego thing?

A PEP indicating instrument isn't an ego thing, but an "accuracy" thing, since no other type of metering instrument indicates anything even slightly resembling actual output power when using SSB or any sort of pulse modes. For many years, only oscilloscopes worked for this measurement, and not everybody has a scope.

I truly enjoy seeing that when running 1000W PEP actual output power, my "average" power indicated on the old Bird 43 is really only about 200W...the 200W more accurately reflects my electric bill, while the 1000W more accurately reflects how I'm heard at the other end of the circuit!

Hi Steve (it's Alan),

Our friend George (N3GH) bought a peak-reading kit for the Bird 43 at Dayton this year. Email him, and he'll be able to fill you in on who makes it, how much, etc.

No, it's a legal thing. The FCC's rules say "1500w *PEP* output power."
