My FT101B, which I have owned for twenty plus years, ten of which were inactive, uses 6JS6C sweep tubes for the finals. Since I purchased this radio used and never had a problem with the finals, I assumed they were the originals. Now I'm not sure. While cleaning the dust, etc., I noticed the marking on the tubes as "6JS6C U.S.A." with a series of dots below that. One of the tubes was marked "compactron" in large yellow letters. The neutralizing circuit still has the Yaesu 100pf 1KWV cap installed. Has anyone heard of these? I have a spare set of RCA tubes on hand in case the're ever needed. Are they compatable? Any info will be appreciated.

Jim-
You could have the original finals-I'm the original owner of a Yaesu FTdx400 that was purchased new in Japan (1967) and it had a US-made GE 6GK6 driver tube (feeding two Toshiba 6KD6's) in it when it came out of the box. "Compactron" was a GE trademark for their line of fat all-glass tubes designed for TV service.
TV "sweep" tubes were designed to drive the horizontal deflection on a TV set and had pretty high peak power outputs. They were used a lot in amateur transceivers in the mid-60's to early 70's; as well as CB linears to this day. They were not really well suited to SSB service and die pretty quickly when run at full power. New replacements are quite expensive ($30-50 each or so), a somewhat cheaper alternative is change the sockets to use the EL509's that Svetlana still makes in Russia. You may need to change the neutralizing cap if you change tube types.
73 and good luck.

Thank you for that info Ken, confirming that these tubes are probably the originals.
I have read that when replacing the finals in FT101's with USA made 6JS6C's or 6146's it's recommended that the neutralizing cap be replaced with a 10pf 1KWV. I was not aware of the Svetlana socket change-out option. Has anyone out there done this; if so would you please comment? Thank you.
And thanks again Ken.
