I find that the 20dB of attenuation offered by the attenuator in the IC706mkIIG is bit too much most of the time. I reckon I would find 10dB more useful. I wonder if anyone has tried to modify the attenuator and if the components are reasonably accessible. I don't have a service manual so maybe someone can point me in the direction of the attenuator circuit (presumably a Pi or T resistive pad?). I'm reasonably handy with a soldering iron and would tackle surface mount components if necessary. Any help would be appreciated.

Since posting the above I have found an IC706 service manual PDF so I should be able to find the info I need, although if anyone has modified the attenuator in the IC706 I would still be pleased to hear from you.

20 dB is just over 3 S-units, which isn't much in my experience, especially when strong signals are almost always over S9. I've never used an IC706, but doesn't it have an RF gain control?
