**Hello Tim, I have to believe you and all the other kind gentlemen that's taken the time to set me straight on the tuner question are completely right...the MFJ idea has been set aside. Biggest problem I'm having here is that, I have been for some time trying to complete this "final" station in all Kenwood equipment and all in the same era of manufacture. I have atlast found a pristine TL-922-A and the SM-220 that were the only missing pieces I needed. Unfortunately Kenwood with all of the great equipment they make, and I have the AT-250 tuner for use without the amplifier, didn't see fit to build and offer to the public a tuner with the capasity to handle the possible Kilowatt of the 922-A.
I am looking now for the matching unit that will be able to bring the Sommers 7 band untrapped antenna into as close to perfect match as possible...that's a complete story all by it'self...again my friends, Elmers one and all. Thank you so much for lending a hand.

Tom, remember the TL-922A has an antenna tuner built-in: It's the output tuning network that matches the 3-500Zs to their load, and it has pretty wide tuning range with good efficiency.
When I had the TL-922A, I used it on all bands with antennas having VSWR >4:1 (sometimes >5:1) with no other tuner, besides the tuning network of the TL-922A. The original tubes lasted fifteen years (until I sold the amp), and are probably still going strong...

Well the Sommers antenna doesn't have any of the 7 bands way up in the 3.1 range, close but no cigar...hi...hi. I am running the 220 into the new shack tomorrow and will give your idea a try right off...17 meters is where I wish to operate as well as 40 meters all SSB, just plain old ragchewing as my contesting days went away with my hearing many years ago...what I have left should keep me going for as long as the volume control holds out.
Thank you for your help

My advice: forget about using the 949. It is a 100 watt tuner. If you use it, you will force the "magic" smoke out of it, and possibly also out of your amp. I've messed with MFJ tuners and I think you are better of buying a Ten-Tec 238, or to build your own link coupled tuner if you run an open wire fed dipole.

Thanks for the tip OM...I've given up the idea of MFJ all together, funny thing tho. ther directions on my at-250 Auto tuner from Kenwood shows it in line with the TL-922-A amplifier??? that really through me a curve I have NOT read the text yet but wouldn't it be great if it would be able to put the final tune on the antenna with the amplifier in line.. I'm using a Sommers 7 band Log antenna where the matches are not above 2.5-1 on any of the bands and I know that the 922-A has a PI circut in it to allow for a lot of bad SWR...this is confusing to this old head of mine for sure...never should of let my MN-2000 get away huh?...lol that Ten-Tek sounds great do you know of one that might be available?
