DOES DSL effect the HAMSHACK Reply
by N3QT on February 27, 2004 Mail this to a friend!
Howdy:

Will DSL "B e h a v e, (Austin Powers)" in the shack?

What are your experiences with internet connectivity beyond dial up? Cable Mode? DSL?

Cause for concern...???

A phone company that starts with a "V" issues split bead ferrites with the do it yourself installation kit.

{aside: I wonder if they are MIX 43, ref. K0BG article? I will have to test.}

Please respond so I can be on the "Reading Edge of Tech-NOL-Ogy".

Well, I was on dialup and am currently using the local cable systems DSL service on the hamshack confuser. I currently have only two HF rigs and three VHF rigs in the shack. The only problem here has been that since I changed to cable I have to log in to E-ham every time I want to post something.

I also have a DSL line and a Jupiter in my office and there's been no problem there either.

No problem with cable modem, 4 computers in the house, some wired 10/100 ethernet, some on 802.11b wireless. No problems with interference either way. But, then again, I mainly run HF, and never >100W.

I have DSL and never had a problem
even running a full gallon.

One thing I did, that I recommend, is
provide the craft person with shielded
station wire and tie the shield to the
ground at the entrance box where
the splitter is installed. I also made my own
shielded cable from jack to DSL MODEM and
shielded CAT five from router to the computers
in the network.

NO noise from the DSL and my transmitters
don't bother it.

I don't have DSL here, I have cable. I asked one of the phone guys when we were gonna get DSL, and he mumbled something about hell freezing over. That aside, my local cable company uses a frequency around 21 Mhz for their return signal. I've never actually seen it on my radio. What I HAVE seen is the Birdie From Hell on 12 meters coming off the ethernet cable from the cable modem to my router. That's really not the fault of the internet provider, unless of course you maintain that they OWN the cable modem and just lease it to me.

Anyway, the Birdie From Hell was more or less resolved just by buying a higher quality wire to go between the cable modem and router. When I give back the cable modem, I'll give them back their defective patch cord and keep the one I bought myself.

On the other side of a shack wall I have a DSL modem, router, and wireless access point for a lap top. The CAT5 cable comes into the back of my radio rack which houses one computer. The phone line is right here as well. No RFI in either direction.
