Check out the Palstar WM-150 which is an active peak-reading wattmeter that can handle up to 3kW

I use several I use several of the diawa models and several versions of the mfj 815 b be sure to get at least the b model or later the plain 815 had a problem with the meter pushing in but the later modlels have it mounter properly. workman also makes a couple models..( buxcommco.com has them) All are pretty accurate . I always use the dual cross needle swr/power meters.. I hate the set and switch, check and adjust, set and check etc. you can tune uo fast with a dual cross needle meter..

Look for a Heathkit HM-2140 or HM-2140A. The biggest problem I've found with today's meters is that they are not linear with frequency. When adjusted for a true 1500 watts out on 40, a typical meter might read only 1100 to 1200 watts on 10 meters. The HM-2140 is nearly frequency independent and reads accurately across the bands. I've checked this with my Bird 43. You can find these meters for under $100 used.

The Ameritron AWM-30 is exceptionally good. It reads very accurate peaks.
Watch out for other types!!! Many of them, including common name brands, are not really very good.
One key is to look to see if the meter requires batteries or external power to run the METER.
NOT THE LIGHTS, but the meter itself.
If the meter works in PEP mode without a battery or external power, you can be sure it is no good on PEP.

I have been using the Autek Research WM-1 with good success. It has two analog movements and displays peak or average on one and vswr on the other. Scales are 20, 200 and 2000. I check its calibration against my Bird from time to time using cw or rtty.

You might want to reconsider the Bird. They are expensive but they are really a life time purchase. They stay accurate, can measure virtually any frequency or power range. I never trusted any meters I used except the Bird.

The best out there is the digital VSWR meter from RF Applications.
Stay away from the one from Autek - while it works, physically is it junk.
