Dating Codes on TUBES Reply
by WA2MGB on March 14, 2004 Mail this to a friend!

I have several tubes that use some sort of "Dot Code" which I believe designates their date of manufacturer...For example my 6146B have a series of dots, vertical and horizontal..

Anyone know how to read the dot date code system?

Tnx

Never was aware of that method Ted.

Every tube code I have ever seen has either been a letter group or a number group or a combination of both, but never "dot codes".

Not saying there isn't, just that since 1966 or so I've never heard of that.

Well, I have been around tubes, and ham radio, since 1947 and I have never seen any date code scheme except the week/yr or yr/wk system. That is, 18-52 or 52-18 are both the 18th week of 1952. But dots and dashes - nothing in my memory like that.

I'll try to upload a picture of what I mean...I am aware of the typical dating system used on most tubes.

Beside wk/yr or yr/wk number codes, they also use letter codes. Letter codes are very common and used by nearly all major manufacturers including Eimac, RCA, Sylvania, etc.

As an example look at an Eimac serial number and it tells you the year and production run (group date) in letter form just before the numbers.
