According to the RF exposure calculator the minimum distance you would need to stay away is 3.32 feet. That's in free space, but if you're shielded by a metal roof you would be fine. Mounted on the trunk lid the distance alone would be enough, plus the added benefit of some surrounding metal and glass. In other words, as long as you're in the car you're fine.

Hello There
I have mounted my last two antennas on the roof of my vehicle. I have never had a problem. Secondly, beware of folks telling you the location doesn't affect your signal much etc. Connect an SWR meter or analyzer to your antenna from both locations and you will find out which one the radio prefers. Just my $.02 worth!

SWR is not a very good indication of how effectivly an antenna is working. My dummy load has a great SWR but makes a very lousy antenna.
Just envision the line-of-sight path that the RF takes from the antenna to the repeater or other station. Mounted on the trunk it is partially shielded by the metal roof structure in some directions. Mounted in the center of the roof it has a clear "sight line" in all directions and a pretty nice, flat ground plane. Overall, it will perform best when mounted in the center of the roof.
RF exposure should not be a problem for the driver in either location. The trunk location might be a problem for a back seat passenger. Again, the roof is the best location from an RF exposure standpoint.
Based on my experiences, I'd rather have a 1/4-wave antenna mounted in the center of the roof than a 5/8-wave antenna mounted on the trunk. The size of a roof mounted antenna can sometimes be an issue. If it is, then use one of the shorter antennas rather than putting a larger antenna on the trunk.

If you put it on the roof the metal on the roof will protect you if you are really worried about it.
