Heya all,
Wondering if anyone has any experience with using a VX-5r or a VX-150 connected to a Rigblaster Nomic to use Echolink? Just curious on if the Nomic has the right cables I need to connect everything and if the PTT works alright on the radio. Right now I have a Yaesu FT-530 but birthday is coming up and I'm thinking of picking up a 5r or a 150(probably 150, 440 and 6meters interests me very little and I already have a 530 if I want 440)and a Nomic so i'm able to talk to my family in another state through Echolink. Just wanted to make sure it worked ok before I shell out the cash for another radio and Rigblaster.
73 to all,
K0SEG

I am not sure, but I do not think the rig blaster comes standard with the proper cables for the VX-150. I am sure you can rig up some cables. I "assuming" you are within range of the local echolink gateway with the HT?
I'm sure you have considered this, but your family MUST have a ham license also to use EchoLink - OR at least one person must have a license to act as Control Operator.
Have fun and good luck,

K9FV,
Just got a response from Western Mountain regarding the vx-150/rigblaster here is what they said:
"We do not make any cables for HTs, as there just too many to make it economical for us to do so.
We do have many folks that have done this and have been successful. The wiring necessary is almost the same as connecting a TNC to a radio (HT) and often there are guidelines for doing that in the radio's Owners Manual.
The RIGblaster nomic experimenter would be the best solution as it comes with a mic cable that has the RJ45 on one end but the other end is just stripped and tinned wires allowing you to attach your own 2.5 and 3.5 plugs and appropriate resistors if necessary"
N6AJR:Sure, I could use the phone but I believe in preservation of the hobby so I think i'll stick to the radio, thanks. Easier(not to mention more enjoyable) to monitor a repeater in Boulder, Colorado and be able to talk to old friends and family while sitting on my porch in San Jose, California with my HT. Of course that's just me...someone who got into the hobby and who USES it rather than stays inactive and whines about how every little change in testing or any new piece of technology is to be the downfall of ham radio.
You know what they say about opinions...

Now that was funny, couldn't of said it better myself.
On the subject though, I'm curious about the same thing. My VX-150 is a solid radio perfect for this use. I hope to find a workable solution for this soon, there is another VX-150 user in my club that wants to do the same thing.

I actually use the radio, I do cw, and psk and rtty and ssb and even monitor and operate a bit on our semi-local repeater. I do have a problem with using the internet and calling it ham radio. I guess its just me.. ( I don't care for chat rooms either.. )..
I just don't like to listen to folks on distant repeaters talk mock DX. Most of them key too fast and start talking while the various links are still actuating and all you here is "What was that" and "say again"... Your milage may vary... tom N6AJR
