Hand mic for HT

I'm trying to get a mic (not a speaker/mic) to work with my HT. I want to listen to the speaker in the HT, but use a hand mic, so here's the question: does anyone offer something like this, over the counter? I've tried using a speaker/mic with an adapter, but haven't found an adapter that will stay put and not "self destruct" so far. How would I go about wiring up a hand mic to work in this scenario? I've seen (in the Icom T7H manual) that the ground(s) go to the sleve and the "hots", both audio and key, go to the tip, with a 33k resistor across the audio circuit. That sound right? Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance & 73s
Bob

What kind of HT?
I use an Icom T90a HT and found that a Motorola speaker mic works very well with it.
This is the same speaker mic that is originally found at places that sell "FRS" radios. (Best Buy, Gander Mountain and even Walmart etc.)
Motorola is very good quality and one can be had for about $25.00 from one of these stores

Thanks for your suggestion. The radio is an RS HTX-420. I just dug up the manual and it shows the ground for the audio and key circuits going to the "barrel" and both "hots" to the tip with a 2.2k resistor between the hot and ground on the audio circuit. I've got an RS speaker/mic, my complaint is that it's sometimes hard to hear what's going on when I use the HT as a mobile, with the speaker/mic. That's why I'm trying to figure a way to use the mic, but let the radio use it's own speaker.

Believe it or not, this is a very hard item to come by. HRO sells one but they get $25 or so for it.
So: I made several of my own.
I bought some Kenwood speaker-mic cut-offs from some guy on eBay. He bought them just to get the radio-end molded plugs and then sold the cut-off active parts!
I cut off the earpiece extension, then converted the wiring to work with Icom's in-line keyeing, and then put a submini mono plug on the wire. I have several of these, and they work great. The cord is short, but that emans it won't get in the way, and the mic is very small. It has a PTT switch on the side.
For mounting, I glued on a tiny rare-earth magnet where the lapel clip used to be, and the little mic sticks to a piece of steel. Very handy!

I also have a Radio Shack speaker/mic. You can plug an extension speaker into the speaker/mic's plug. I suggest you install an extension speaker in your vehicle. When you use the HT in your vehicle, plug the speaker/mic into the HT and the extension speaker into the speaker/mic. You will be able to use the external mic and you will hear the receive audio through the extension speaker.

Thanks guys! All good thoughts. I think I'm gonna look around and see if I can find a 2.5mm male to 2.5mm female adapter or short extension. I've used the stereo (3 contact) adapters before, but they always gave up the ghost after a couple hours of tugging on the mic. Perhaps a short extension, say 2 or 3 feet long, will work out better. That ought to be enough strain relief to save the jack. I have to admit, I'm really tempted to just whack the speaker plug off the speaker/mic I've got, but something in me says that I have to make it work without hurting it! Thanks again, I really appreciate everyone's time and thoughts.
73s & take care,
