This post probably should be placed on the Mods forum. However, over the last couple of weeks there has been several questions posted on the Elmers Forum about the legitimacy and the factory support there of dealing with the "60 meter mod" for Icom IC706s. I sent Icom America an e-mail asking for specific details. Below is the contents of that e-mail.
While I realize there are many amateurs who have performed this mod without any apparent problems, it opens up a whole can of worms with respect to abuse, warranty repairs, and the less-obvious IMD splatter these mods can and do generate.
Here is the contents of the e-mail:
Thank you for contacting ICOM Technical Support.
Currently we do not have any approved mods for the 60 meter band. We will post them on our website just as soon as we have completed our evaluations.
We may not be able to provide a modification for the 60 meter band as the 706MKIIG was originally designed before the 60 meter band was allowed by the FCC. The MARS/CAP modification allows for transmission on all bands both within and outside the amateur frequencies.
You must provide ICOM America with a copy of your current MARS or CAP operator's license in order to obtain radio modification instructions. You can mail your modification request along with a self addressed stamped envelope and a copy of your MARS/CAP license to:
ICOM America, Inc.
Attn: Tech Support
2380 116th Ave. NE
Bellevue, WA, 98004
Or, you can fax your request and your MARS/CAP license to: (425) 637-8417
Expanded frequency modification requests which do not include a copy of the appropriate license will not be honored

To me this clearly means that Icom does not intend to honor any IC706MKIIG that is returned to them because damage was done because of the mod. for 60 meters for which the radio was not designed. However if the damage was done by use of the MARS/CAP frequencys and you have the authority to use them then they will fix the problem. Bill

That is pretty much your standard policy on moded radio's.
60M has all sorts of mil-like specs to meet for IMD, stability, and bandwidth.
I was shocked to find out that my Yeasu FT-100D with a TCXO did not meet spec for 60M.
Many radio's like the TS-850, just need the TCXO board to meet spec.
Do not expect .18uv sensitivity out of the ham bands.
UHF and VHF not type accepted period.
Some hams purchased commercial 1.6-30MHZ rigs to use 60M.
