OK.. I managed to scratch the LCD on my brand new Kenwood F6A HT. Not bad at all.. most wold never see it BUT bad enough that I can seeit. I have heard over the years of easy ways to polish out small light scratches.. Any odeas? These lines (actually two) are very light runnign vertical top to bottom right smackint he middle of the LCD. Does not distort and as I said they are very light but by turning it inthe right light I canplainly see them..
Any "proven" suggestions <g>. any ideas?? Let me know thanks
Dan

I have used an eraser to successfully remove light scratches from plastic lenses. I found the most success using a fine-grained, white eraser; it almost feels like a plastic instead of a grainy rubber. Of course, your mileage may vary. Good luck.

By far, the best way to remove the scratch would be to use a buffing wheel. It's just a cloth-like soft wheel which is mounted in a bench grinder. The use of a little "jewler's ream" (sp?) on the wheel before use helps to fill-in fine scratches. I immagine they probaly also make "miniature" versions of these for Dremel tools and the like.
Alternatively, if you're looking for a more "chemical" solution to the problem, see if you can find some "windshield polish" which is usually sold by places that sell ATV's (4-wheelers). ATV's sometimes come with plastic windshields installed, which, as you might immagine, tend to get scratched fairly easily (considering their use). This polish usually does a really good job of removing scratches (but it doesn't work miracles - the scratches need to be very light). I know for sure that Arctic Cat sells a product like this; you might check around for others.

Go to a private airport to one of the FBO's and pick up a windshield scratch removal kit for about $30. Pilots have been using these kits for years on their windshields.

A tube of Semi-Chrome avaiable at motorcycle shopes, etc., patience and some elbow (actually, finger) grease and you'll be in fat city. DO NOT use a Dremel type buffer no matter what you use to buff it, the high speed will cause enough heat to melt the plastic.

Have to agree w/ KE4DRN, Novus plastic polishes are the way to go, try some Novus #2 on it.

Almost any paste car wax and some liquid polishes will take out scratches on plastics. You should be careful and not exert much pressure on the LCD. I have never tried to de-scratch an LCD but I tried on a meter once and it took awhile for the static charge to die down enough for the needle to stop deflecting. Sometimes I am afraid that I will make a problem worse instead of correcting it. This usually occurs AFTER I've tried the cure! Hihi

A simple readily available solution.
believe it or not...........toothpaste!!
I recently purchased a used ht that appears to have fallen on the ground and slid across concrete. The display was badly scratched and gouged, but was such a good deal I could not pass up.
In the past I have used toothpast to polish up plastic headlight lens on my mini van so thought I'd give it a try on the HT's lcd display.
Although the gouges were very deep the toothpase polished them enough to be able too see through them, and completly eliminated the minor not soo deep scratches. Give it a try, you'd be surprised.
Now what I do when I get a new ht I place the wider clear celephone tape over the display to help protect it.
