I've had good luck with Displex (http://www.displex.com/). It won't take out really deep gouges, and it can leave swirl marks on really soft plastics, but it seems to work wonders for taking out light gouges on HT lenses. And it's cheap.

I have used all commercial plastic polishes and cleaners but I have discovered that paint rubbing compound works extremetly well and its cheap. Use only the 'light' or 'fine' versions NOT course. Use extremely small amounts and use one of those monitor lintless glass cleaning cloths to apply it. Rub lightly.

K0CBA is right - if you use a motorized buffing tool you could possibly generate enough heat to melt the plastic lens. If you're careful, though, and only leave the tool applied for very short periods of time, it will work very well, and remove even deep scratching.

Brasso metal polish. Yes, I know it's named, "metal polish." But read the fine print on the container - for plastic lenses, too.
Use a Q-Tip(tm) to apply a little bit to the lens, and gently rub in circular motions with a clean finger. Do not apply too much - or it will get into the area 'tween the lens and the case.
Do this a couple of times, and minor scratches disappear - and the lens is polished.
Available at Home Depot Stores in the cleaning solutions aisle.
And do what *I* neglected to do when I purchased my $300+ HT: spend an extra six or seven percent of your purchase for a protective CASE for your HTs!!!

Dan, the Novus products are great. Follow directions, and you may need 2-3 grades if the scratch is deep.
Anything with any petrochemical solvent in it can damage some plastics, so if you use something else check the label carefully. Crest does a nice job, if you're using toothpaste, because it uses diatomaceous earth as the abrasive and that's also sold as polishing compound. But other brands may use other materials.
I'd still buy the Novus for something worth bucks, rather than take a chance.
