RTTY wave on SM-220 with TS-950SDX and KAM-XL Reply
by HB9DHG on August 9, 2004 Mail this to a friend!
Hello and thanks to read this post.

I'm having some problems to monitor
the RTTY Wave/signal on my Station Monitor SM-220
with the Kenwood TS-950SDX and a Kantronics TNC
(Kam XL).

I've connected the rear cinch and the front V.INPUT
and with those connections I can monitor the band frequency and my output transmission (SSB/CW), but:

How I can check the RTTY output signal (wave) ?
Where to take the Mark/Space on the Kantronics or
even on the TS-950SDX ?

Many thanks for any tip.

Here is the reply I received, although I'm not sure
it answers your question. If this is the answer you
were looking for, please let me know. I was under the impression that you wanted to monitor your -transmitted- signal? This reply tells you that your setup is not capable of monitoring for -received- signals on the band for tuning purposes.

Good luck, -Web, KR4WM

Hi

This is a basic problem with any setup using the Kantronics or similar boxes. There is no dedicated mark / space output to drive a scope. Older TU's like the ST-6 had this feature. The KAM XL does not have this feature.

When I asked the Kantronics guys what they did about this at the Dayton Hamfest 10 years ago their answer was: "We use a sound card program on a PC to tune with" . I did not think that was a good answer then and do not think it's a good answer today. However it is what most people do.

Take Care!

Hi Bob,
thanks for the answer. Yes, I've supposed
this. But last question:

Can I try to open the Kantronics KAM
and take directly the MARK/SPACE Signal out
of the TNC and connect directly to the V/H Input
of the SM-220 ? Think Yes but not sure ....

Hi Web,
I've missed to give you a BIG thanks for
the answer! Let me know about my last question
because wrongly written to Bob :-) and not directly
to you!

In any case thanks for your ham-friendly support.
