Check out http://www.arrl.org/sections/NTX.html
this is the North TX web site with email address for
the local EC.
I did a quick search for Dallas ares but you folks down that way use county names instead of cities to identiy.
you might just enter your county and ares into a search engine for some help.

This assumes that the local EC will bother to return your email. I wrote mine about a week ago, here in Los Angeles, and haven't heard back yet. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...maybe he's on vacation.
I gather that there are a lot of really organized Ecoms groups out there. Virginia seems organized, based on posts I've read here. But in the Los Angeles area, wow, flaky.
The county DCS unit is falling apart because of politics. My local city RACES unit has ignored new members for 6 months, and won't schedule training for them. I can't even get on their mailing list for the monthly newsletter, even though I check into the weekly net and attend the monthly meetings. The ARES EC doesn't return email. I've been trying to get involved for months, and I barely get the time of day from the local groups. It appears there is little if any interest in getting new members trained and involved. I wish you better luck than I have had.
I just hope that when the "big one" hits LA, the cell phones work.

If the EC doesn't answer you in a reasonable time, work up the chain by contacting the Section Emergency Coordinator or Section Manager. That's what we're here for.
The SEC for LAX is
Henry Magid, K6YMJ
12734 Branford St Ste 20
Arleta, CA 91331-6836
(818)709-4229, (818)881-5009
k6ymj@arrl.net
The SM for LAX is
Phineas J. Icenbice, W6BF
19323 Halsted St
Northridge, CA 91324-2124
818-349-3186
w6bf@arrl.org
It's all (plus a registration form in PDF format) on the ARRL web site.
Thanks for volunteering

To answer the initial question, start with your local Radio Club. There will normally be from a few to many of the members that are active in ARES. From them you can get the time/date of the local ARES Net(s).
Start to participate (check in regularly) and most groups will invite you to join. This provides two advantages, 1) the ARES group knows you are interested 2) in light of number 1 they will put you in contact with the local person that handles membership and training for the ARES group.
One other option is to look on the internet for your Section web page (you can find out what Section you are in from QST). In that page will normally be a list of the Districts with information about their net schedules.
