D-STAR or NO? Reply
by K0BLR on November 5, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
Hi group,

Question........I am forming my go kit. So my question is this in a state with 200+ analog Repeaters and roughly 8-10 D-star repeaters should I consider getting D-star enabled radios?

There are no D-star repeaters anywhere close to me I should mention to.

The usefulness of D-star is going to depend on your state and/or local responds plan. If dstar isnt part of it then dstar isnt needed. Not to say that getting dstar is bad, having options is always good. You have a dual band radio for emcomm's and if needed dstar when you want. There still a bit pricy so I do see me getting one anytime soon without seeing mass adoption locally, but who knows.

I agree with the other poster. Plan for what is being used. If it is experimental or in beta testing mode, unless you just want to spend money, I'd wait.

Kinda like 220MHz where I am. Radio has become a pretty expensive door stop...

Thank you guys for the input. As far as what is in the Response plan for the State I have no clue! I guess I am not really pervy to that information. Some thing I sould ask our new SEC here in Minnesota.

I am looking at right now getting several FT-7900r's for radios. Nice this is they are cheap!

thank you again

Hey Ben, Hello from down here in Rochester, MN. We are in the discussion a lot down here with whether to get D-Star or not in our area. While I think a lot of people down here are interested including myself, the upstart cost is the difficult part and then the slow process of people getting D-star radios who already have other radios.

In my opinion, until D-Star products come down a little in price, I will probably stick with looking for cheaper alternatives for EmComm stuff so that it doesn't exclude hams that just can't afford the D-Star upgrade price yet.

I have been looking into NBEMS for VHF digital and trying to find a few operators in my area to experiment with me on it. What I like about it in theory right now is that the software download is free off the internet and even a Tech level operator can start with it if he/she has a laptop.

Hi Rodney,

Thank you for the reply! That has not even been talked about up here in Central Minnesota at all. I to am looking NBEMS also. I just learned that the new radio that yaesu will be introducing is not replacing the 8800R so I think I may go with a couple of 8800R's. Say maybe just 10 or so.

so thats what I am thinking of! I want to test NBEMS but I doubt anyone knows what the heck it is.

Not sure you need to check with your SEC, check with your EC or DEC first, then work you way up to SEC.

By all means.
Always get the most high-end technology, used by the fewest people, available only at the highest cost.
That way, when it fails, you don't have to worry about actually being useful to anybody.

I agree that the Yaesu FT 8800 is a MUCH better suited radio for Emcom use. The ability to cross band repeat should not be understated. Plus the 8800 has true dual receive. (Actually like two radios in the one box.)

Thank you again Everyone for the reply!

I am going with the 7900R because its cheaper to go that option than going with the 8800R which is 389 or something like that. I have to go with whatever my money allows me to.

This is the best option I could deal with.

Also I should clraify one area. For ARESMAT we answer directly to the SEC. ARESMAT doesn't have a DEC. It only has a EC then goes direct to the SEC.
