Are there any fox hunters in the midwest? I know that a few groups exist out west in the Califoria area, but I don't know of any in the midwest, with the exception of a group in the Dayton/Cincinati area.
I am wanting to get started in ARDF and wanting to find an elmer that can help me get started. I'm willing to drive to meet up with a group if they exist.

Did you check Joe Moell K0OV's website at www.HomingIn.com?
He has lists of contacts around the country. If he doesn't
have a listing in your area, an email to him might give
you some leads.
The reflector ardf@kkn.net is another good resource for
this sort of inquiry.
Any chance you can attend the National ARDF Championships
in Boston? (Joe's announcement should be a few posts below
this one, or check his web site.) That is a good opportunity
to learn from some of the top competitors in the country.
Lack of activity is a problem in many areas, however.
Here in Oregon we're lucky to have a practice once or
twice a year, which really isn't enough. Having at least
one other person to help (at least to hide the transmitters
for you) is a big help: with two hunters you can each
hide a transmitter then look for the other one.
While Oregon isn't exactly in the midwest, let me know
if I can be of assistance.

As you may know, there are two distinct types of competitive radio foxhunts, vehicular and all-on-foot. Since you mentioned ARDF, you probably are interested in the on-foot type. The nearest hotbed of such activity to you centers in the Cincinnati area and it draws participants from three states (Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky). Contact WA6EZV or WB4SUV to find out about upcoming events in the forests. I won't post their e-mail addresses here, but if you send me a private e-mail via the address on my Web site, I'll send them to you.
If you would prefer the vehicular type (which sometimes include a bit of on-foot "sniffing" at the end, the closest activity to you is probably in Chicago. There is also a hunt at least once a year in Kankakee. Links to mobile foxhunting groups around the country are here:

Of course it might be easier to just get your local ham club interested in having its own hunts!

Joe Moell K0OV
