Iam looking for information about purchasing a small tracking collar that could fit a cat and be located using a standard amateur handheld receiver and directional antenna. Thank you Bob KK7WN olsenbfin@msn.com

Most of the commercial tracking collars don't operate in the ham bands. Many are in the 214 - 220 MHz range, which you handheld might receive, but an FM receiver may or may not do well at receiving the pulsed signals that are needed to prolong battery life. Communications Specialists may be able to help: http://www.com-spec.com/ Or LL Electronics: http://www.radiotracking.com/ Otherwise there are some inexpensive 433 MHz transmitter chips that could be used if you wanted to build your own.

Com-Spec has just what you need for tracking in the 222 MHz ham band. Go to http://www.com-spec.com/rcplane/index.html and click on PRODUCTS. Then contact Spence Porter at Com-Spec and ask if he can make a version of the PT-1B or AT-2B in a collar that's suitable for whatever critter you want to track. I'll bet he can do it easily. Of course these 222 MHz transmitters can only be used by licensed hams, since they exceed Part 15 limits. 73, Joe Moell K0OV
