Homemade Segmented Dipole Reply

Hi all,
I have been looking at makeing a dipole antenna to use on 6meters and 11meters. According to the article that i have been reading it says to subdivide each leg in series to each other insulated by a insulator and then use a jumper to change bands. Since the 11 meter dipole would be longer in lenght rig that up and then hook up the 6 meter dipole right under that, when wanting to use 6 meters just switch the jumper correct? Will this work?
Or are there other ways to go about doing this other than makeing a ground plane antenna?

I suspect the original article meant to make one dipole
with insulators in it at the proper length for 6m. There
would be extensions beyond the insulators that would make
a 11m dipole if you put a jumper across the insulators.

So each side would be 1.5m of wire connected to the coax
with an insulator on the other end. This is your 6m dipole.
There would be an additional 1.25m of wire connected to
the other side of this insulator so it will work on 11m
instead if you jumpered around the insulators with a cliplead.

Depending on the mechanical (and practical) circumstances,
it may be more convenient to build separate dipoles for
both bands with a common feedpoint, which wouldn't require
any switching between them.

First of all I would like to thank everyone for there suggestions and tips. I like the idea of the fan dipole, makes more since than the other type of dipole and makes switching bands so much more easier. I do have a question. What would the lenghts have to be for the 6meter and 11 meter bands. I know that the 11 meter band is 8.5feet on each side. Would 52.8 or 60ft sound right for each side for the 6 meter band? Also this type of antenna does not need a antenna tuner does it? I don't have just a swr meter at the moment. I assume by using 50ohm coax no balum is needed?
I also would like to build a dipole to listen to 160-15 meters. Can you put up just a randon wire antenna at a specific lenth to listen in on the different bands?

The common formula for a dipole is 468/f, where f is the
frequency in MHz. This gives the result in feet. So you
will find that a 6m dipole is closer to 9 feet long rather
than 60.

Although such an antenna shouldn't require a tuner, it does
need to be "tuned", that is, it will require some adjustment
for minimum SWR to take into account construction tolerances
and the local environment. Usually this means adjusting
the length of the wires for minimum SWR. This is a good
excuse to join the local radio club and/or meet some
local hams and have someone bring over a meter to help
you.


You can put up a long wire for listening to other bands,
or just unscrew the shell of the coax connector and pull
it out from the socket a bit - with just the center
conductor touching the antenna and feedline will act like
a long wire antenna.

I have a 6 meter rig and I wanted to do some experimenting with the rig and the band. As for 11 meters (CB) I have a few friends that use it from time to time, I also like to listen in and to a little dxing from time to time with others. I just figured If I got some experience putting up hf antennas and I could use these bands to do my experimenting before I upgraded my license later on.

For relatively local work, you'll probably have the best
results with the 11m dipole vertical (or at least sloping
so it is as vertical as possible.) The 6m dipole would
do best vertical if you are operating FM, but it should be
horizontal for CW/SSB weak signal work. (This is simply
the convention that others use, and you'll generally get
the best results if you use the same polarizaton as the
stations you are trying to work.) This might be a good
argument for using two wires instead of moving jumpers
to change bands.
