Any uses for this toroid? Reply
by K5CQB on May 31, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
I picked up some toroids because they were so cheap. They are light blue and marked hf-090125-2 and from what I can tell they are made by Arnold Magnetic Technologies. According to Arnold and AMG-Core the ratings are permability 125u and inductance 90mH +-8%. They have been sitting in the drawer for a while and I have gotten the itch to build some QRP stuff. Would these work on any type of antenna tuners? If not would they have any use at all?

Thanks,
Jim

90mH is way too high for RF work, you normlly want values in the microhenry (uH) or nanohenry (nH) range. All is not lost though because these toroids will probably make fine power supply filters.

OK, thanks. I am sure I have homebrew power supply in my future.
Thanks and 73,

If the size is appropriate, 125µ material is good balun material. Amidon type 61 ferrites are also rated at 125µ. You must have unwrapped a lot of wire to get down to where you could see the core's color!

They might work in audio filters. There used to be
a lot of CW and RTTY audio filters made from surplus 88 mh toroids.

one example would be the microR2 series by KK7B in January 1993 QST. It used the 88mH coils in the audio filter.

I think the Binaural receiver also uses these.
