Hello,
I was looking at trying to build a homemade OSJ146/440 antenna. I have a question. Can you use threaded rod to use as the main elements or does it have to be solid aluminum? I was planning on using a piece of steel angleiron I have at home to mount the thing to. Just wanted to see if any one else has done this and if it would work?
What do you think, will it work?
Thanks,
Joseph

You can make it that way, however, my understanding is that steel is not a good conductor at RF so you probably would get degraded performance. It would also be quite a bit heavier and would also need paint to stop corrosion.

I wouldn't.
Steel is an inferior conductor and after oxidizing (which occurs one millisecond after exposure to air), get worse.
Antennas are the most important part of any radio station, amateur or otherwise, and it's where the "big bucks" should be spent. To save a few dollars in construction materials seems foolhardy.
