MPN3700 Pin Diode Replacement

Does anyone know of a replacement for a MPN3700 Pin Diode in a TO-92 case? I looked up ON Semiconductor's cross-reference list and they indicated MMBV3700LT1G is the replacement, but this part is SMD (SOT-23) with three leads. Apparently pin 1 and 3 are the anode and cathode respectively, but I'm not sure what pin 2 is for. I suppose I could surface mount this diode on the underside of the board but I'd prefer to keep everything thru-hole mounted on the top side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gene (KB3ONA)

OnSemi produces this part but they note on their website that it is approaching the end of production.
FOund it on Digi-Key but you have to order 5000 pieces minimum. Ouch! Mouser has stock of the item in
the SOT-23 package at $0.47 each quantity 1. It also crosses to a 863-MMBV3700LT1G (Mouser Part Number) and they show stock but once again it is the SOT-23 package.
What you can do is to solder leads on to the SOT-23 package. Use a TO-92 device to make a mold. Remove the TO-92 part from the mold and insert the SOT-23 with leads. Buy two part epoxy, the long cure time stuff as the 5 minute types remain sticky for a long time even though they have cured. If you want a black case then consider adding a dye for epoxies, or spray it with black spray paint or use a black magic marker.
You might try e-Bay. There are a bunch of vendors that unload new old stock items and you may luck out.

Diodes are often packaged in 3-lead cases using only two
of the leads. There is some cost savings by using a
standard package (so assembly houses don't need extra
pick and place equipment) but also it adds some stability
to the package.
The extra lead is simply left unconnected inside the package.

Check with W8DIZ. He may sell you some MPN3700 diodes. He uses them in the Linear Amp Kit.

Good luck,
