Does the FCC or someone keep an archive of old callsigns somewhere? I would like to look up a long time ago buddy to see if he is still active with another call.

Just do a search on his name. This is available at the FCC ULS site, the ARRL, or QRZ.com.

Good suggestion, but all I knew was his call and first name from 40 years ago when we were both just getting started. Hence I was wondering if the FCC had an archive somewhere.

Well, in that case, try http://www.geocities.com/w3hf/. I think he will look up callsigns for you.

A good source is www.vanityhq.com. Try the unique look-up in the upper left corner of the page. Type in the callsign and click on the owl's eyes. The info you want should pop up.

I am a 3rd generation HAM and My son has passed his exam at 13 years old to be the 4th generation in our family. There were many years where there were no licensed amateurs in the family. I am very interested in finding what Call sign my father and grandfather held when they operated. I have very fond memories of the wire antenna in the back yard and the CW key that I watched my grandfather talk to the world with. I still have the key. BUT, I have no idea and can find no record of his call sign. Any help would be appreciated.
73 and thanks in advance;

Rick,
See the W3HF site Alan posted above. I had something similar when I wanted to retrieve my grandfather's original 0x2 call. He found it in a 1920's call book. The chances are best if you provide the licensee's full legal name, city or at least state, and the years you believe he was licensed there. He found my grandfather, even though, unknown to me, he was licensed in Florida (where I knew he had relatives) and not in Texas where I thought he would have been. So, the more information, the better. It's a hand search, as the job of building a complete database has always proved to be just too much for anyone.
