Not only is the original article out in left field, but some of the ham responders don't seem to know what they are talking about either. Nobody even mentioned that hams are required by the FCC to do an analysis to ensure that the meet the RF safety requirements.

Ham radio ops have be operating for many decades prior to the current antenna radiation check.

Yet not once has any amateur grown a 3rd eye in their forehead or in back of their head--although naughty childeren in grades 1 thru 4 would swear that their teachers DID have a eye in the back of their head.

Hence all this hype about radiation is Bull S.

The FCC requires that amateurs running above a certain power on a specific band perform a site analysis to determine if the RF fields are below a specif limit where persons are. When this is done, and the power is reduced if needed, our RF emissions are considered 'safe' the the FCC.

The highest RF fields by far that most people are subjected to are from cell phones.

There is no statistically significant correlation between large HV AC power lines and childhood lukemia. There is ongoing research on the effects of cell phone emissions (30 V/m field where the phone touches the ear).

Over 50 years ago, if you said that ham radio was a danger to children, my mother would have agreed. Once I caught the bug, I turned my whole bedroom into a shambles with my novice cw rig and antenna wires out the window (Required slightly cracking the window letting in the Texas mosquitoes. Then a couple years later, there i was with a homebrew SSB setup--and more--and more--and more stuff.

"Darn right", my mother would have said, "Ham radio is a menace. Without hams, my boy could be down there in the bog with all the others drinking Lone Star beer. Instead he's wasting his time talkin' to these other countries."

Your question was whether ham radio operators, not ham radio operation, was a danger to our children.

Years ago, I remember a line on the 610 FCC form to obtain/renew a license. It asked if you were a felon. If you were, you didn't get a license.

Nowadays, we hear all too frequently of hams who have done or are doing time for child molestation. One I found on the internet even posts his prison picture on qrz.com.

This seems inconsistent with our efforts to recruit youngsters into our ranks, doesn't it.

Danger to our children?

Idiots like the one who wrote the article are more a danger to children - because they don't understand science and technology, neither will kids they come into contact with. Without getting kids into science and technology, we will eventually see western economies collapse - we've already seen what's happened to our manufacturing industries. Having kids good with computers isn't the be-all and end-all of science.

That guy was a troll, not to mention he is congenitally stupid. He was so far off base that even the ACLU would have jumped on him.

Banning licensees from neighborhoods because they "might" use a hidden antenna...right. In this country, that is discrimination.

After Hurricane IKE and other events, the legislators are very, very high on Amateur radio. They were able to see first hand how useful the Amateurs were in the Houston area for hospitals, relief stations and so on.

Just keep being good hams and set good examples. That's all we have to do.
