People who refuse to reciprocate on your QSL Reply
by KD5FJE on June 30, 2005 Mail this to a friend!
What do you guys think of hams who refuse to return a QSL after you've sent them one? [Domestic]

Personally I think it's very low class and a violation of a strict tradition, not to mention just plain rude. If someone can't afford a few bucks in .23 cent stamps every month, they need to sell that KW linear.

And I'm NOT talking about people who have been looked up thousands of times and DXers or special events, just regular hams and regular QSO's.

Rude? Matter of opinion.

Low class? Matter of opinion.

However ... it is their decision and their 23 cents. And many hams don't QSL at all for a variety of reason.

Personally, if I want a card from someone, I send them an SASE. I always put MY card in an envelope and I prefer to get them back the same way. I really don't like cards with bar code labels, PO cancellations, bend,, tears and other assorted junk on them.

I QSL 100 percent and I send them back the same way I received one.

Thanks for your opinion Lon. I'm glad to hear you do QSL 100%, even w/ SASE. desired. I probably should have used the word courteous rather than rude or low class. Glad to hear your opinion.

I just happen to QSL 100% and I always initiate no matter who started the QSO. That's just me. I don't send SASE's unless it's a special event or DX and I don't expect one either.

I'll partially agree with Lon...

Many Amateurs do not routinely QSL for domestic contacts, because they are, well, routine! I don't normally QSL for HF domestic contacts, unless requested during the QSO, and an exchange is mentioned at the time. If I receive a QSL later, I WILL QSL 100%, although it may take a while to print up more cards if I don't have any more on hand.
For VHF contacts (other than local,) or satellite contacts, I will QSL 100% with a SASE. The same for special event stations; if I want their card, I send a SASE.
I will QSL a DX contact (precious few lately) if requested or I want their card, again with a SASE or envelope with IRC.

But if you send a card AND SASE and still get no response, then yes, I say it IS rude and inconsiderate. With a SASE, even if the operator has no cards printed up, at least a handwritten response should be a common courtesy. If I don't include a SASE< I'm not surprised if I don't get a card in return. Then again, I'm not a "paper chaser" looking for awards; but the occasional "special" (at least to myself) contact makes it worth sending a SASE along with my own card.

KD5FJE, I don't know how long you've been active, but achieving a "100% return rate" on QSL cards has never been possible. Back when I was first licensed 40 years ago, achieving a 50% return rate was considered pretty good -- from domestic contacts -- back when postage for a card was four cents.

Many hams simply don't care about QSL cards, and don't have any -- nor do they want to have any.

I'd think a 50% return rate today is probably outstanding.

Certainly professionally printed QSL cards, with SASE and envelopes and such seem to be the way folks do it these days.

Some folks, of course, just aren't iterested in the cards at all. Others really want to have pristine cards untouched by stamps and such. And both of those viewpoints are valid.

But I came across a website - http://hamgallery.com/qsl/Interesting/ - a while back that had quite a number of old (really old) QSL cards. Some of the "big names" in the field were included - and it struck me that the QSL cards back then were in fact postcards.

After thinking about it for a while, I decided that the old ways make a lot of sense.

I do mostly 6m and 2m SSB - and for those contacts, I QSL 100%, by post card. (I print them myself, using my computer.) It cuts the costs and complexity, and gets back to simply acknowledging the contact. The postage, the cancellations, etc - they all add character.

I'm delighted when someone sends a card back - but if they don't, that's fine. I can find other things to worry about.

So, I send a ham a QSL card and don't get one back. Does it bother me? No. I could have WAS by the first year I was a ham if everyone I sent cards to sent me one back. This is just a hobby, not an anal-retentive ritual. It's just not worth getting all bothered about.

I think that those that do not return a QSL are just that... RUDE.

I would suggest that you include on your card that you want a card back.

It has aken me nearly 25 years to finally collect all 50 cards, the last card took two email messages to get the guy to give up a card.

and. no, I am not very active... but that should not matter

I guess I'm guilty as charged of this one. I usually intend to respond to QSL cards and sometimes in my busy life, it gets lost in the shuffle. I'm using a pretty good free QSL printing program but I lost the settings and have yet to get it setup right again. I have several cards here complete with S.A.S.E.'s sitting here waiting on me. I've had some almost a year! Those guys are going to get their card soon. Your post has motivated me to get on fixing my program. Tell you what though, I think a lot of hams do themselves a disservice by not participating in LOTW and eqsl. I upload logs to those regularly. With a good logging program, it's quite simple to do. My favorite is Logger32, it has a lot of user definable features and you can't beat the price. It's free!
