VX-5R Trouble Reply

I recently bought a earbud/mic combo for my VX-5R. As I insert the accessory the unit transmits until I insert it completely and then if that wasn't enough, the little orange light that allows you to see the screen in the dark comes on. Is this normal and if not will it mess w/ my radio?

I tried that on my Wife's VX-5R and nothing strange happened. Are you doing this with the unit turned ON???

It is recommended that you turn off the rig before plugging into a jack that has voltage (i.e. the PTT line) that is normally actuated by pulling it to ground. As you are plugging in the plug, one of the rings shorts the PTT line to ground and keys the transmitter.
