improve wifi directional antenna ? Reply
by SV1ENS on August 30, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
Hi All,
Found a nice 9db wifi directional antenna in a hamfest, I'd like to use it for a long range connection, 9db might work OK, still haven't tried.
I would like to extent the range if possible just in case, I had read someplace that if you place an antenna inside a cooking wok (the parabolic type) the gain can increase...

I suppose this might work as a reflector element, any ideas ???

Google "Pringles Cantenna".

It works (good) only if the antenna is pointed into the parabola. Think of it like a satellite dish. The antenna (electronics) are looking at the dish for the signal rather than the source of the signal.

The above suggestion is good. There are paint bucket antennas etc. All work rather well all things considered.

Take a look at http://www.usbwifi.orconhosting.net.nz/ and see what they've been doing - their larger versions show 12-15 dB gain, line-of-sight up to 5 KM, for about $5 worth of parts in addition to the USB wi-fi stick...
