FT 7800 RX sensitivity Reply

This has been vexing me for awhile. I am on break right now and I need to know!!

Is there anyone way to improve the RX sensitivity on the FT7800? I am wondering if the software has some programming to prevent good 1.25 or AM reception. I only can hear an AM signal when it is really OVERDRIVEN.

I think that the sensitivity is VERY VERY LOW in the non-ham bands that something is amiss.

I don't know what AM signals you're trying to listen to (aircraft maybe?), but VHF radios which have wide-band receivers tend to have lousy receive outside their nominal bandpass (2 meters, 70 cm). It is just the nature of the beast. You could add a preamp, but I'd bet it won't help very much.

If you have to have a really good, all mode VHF radio, the the Icom IC-910 is the way to go. No one has a better one, and probably won't considering the trend in amateur transceivers.

Gonna guess the antenna has a lot to do with it too. Something like a 5/8 2M antenna would be nothing more than a shorted piece of coax at 1MHz.

You can plug a discone into this radio and only get S1 signals from HELOS flying above on the VHF airband.

What gives? I think that something is off.

I have the same radio and have no trouble listening to the AM VHF airband under 2 meters. Signals are strong and I pick up aircraft for a few hundred miles.

i have the ft8800 and have noticed that receiving am aircraft i have to turn the volume down to hear them clearly, anything more that 40% or so and it is just noise.
i noticed this a couple weeks ago when there was an overdue craft in my area. i was driving around the island trying to listen to the coastguard on one side and scan the aircraft frequencies on the other. i had actually gave up on trying to listen to the aircraft frequencies all together till i stumbled on this one.
unfortunatly they never did find the craft, its been 4 weeks now.
