Installing IC-2100H in '99 Ford F-150 Reply
by W1WH on June 20, 2002 Mail this to a friend!
I recently obtained an IC-2100H to be used in my '99 Ford F-150. Does anyone have any installation tips particularly with respect to running the power cable through the firewall?

I just installed an IC-2800H in my Ford Aerostar. My vehicle doesn't exactly match yours but I imagine the basic principles are the same. The 2800H is in two parts: the control head and display head. I mounted the control head under the driver seat and the display head to the right of the steering wheel on the dash.

I ran power thru the firewall by first examining both sides for 'landmarks', i.e. looking for wire bundles, etc. that already were passing thru the firewall. I was hoping I could find an existing pass-thru I would use but unfortunately everything was too well used/sealed/etc. so I had to drill a new hole.

However, using these 'landmarks' as a reference I found a point I could drill a hole thru that gave me 1) space to work (on both sides), 2) 100% certainty I wouldn't be drilling thru something else important and 3) located in a spot in the interior where I could still get to it yet route the wire out of view (behind kick panels, etc.).

I started with a small 1/8" pilot hole just to verify everything would be OK. Once I assured myself the ultimate (larger) hole would not intefere with anything and I could actually get to it to run the wire I enlarged the hole ONLY to a size I could insert a rubber grommet (VERY important!) and slide the 16 ga 12v & gnd wire thru the grommet. To be on the safe side I also glued the grommet in place since I didn't want it working out later from vibration and the sharp edge of the hole rubbing/cutting the power cable.

After snaking more than enough wire thru the hole to reach 12v & gnd I inserted an in-line fuse holder on the 12v side, then tied this to a 12v source about 6" from the battery (starter relay I think) using a soldered ring connector. The negative side I tied to a chassis ground point already present, again, using a soldered ring connector. Once the wiring was done in the engine compartment I sealed the entry point thru the firewall using coax seal for waterproofing.

The interior routing is easy... just find ways to route the cable under trim etc. to hide the cable to the radio.

Hope this helped

Thanks Mike. It sounds like you were a little gutsier with the drill than I was! Glad it worked out for you. I was able to find an existing hole today - just above the steering column - that worked out very well. The radio is installed and works great!

If you will temporarily pull the carpet up just to the right of the steering column in the floor there is a LARGE gromet there. You can run all kinds of cable thru it. I have my Yaesu 2600's power cable and a piece of coax running in mine. I have a dual band antenna on the left fender opposite the stereo antenna. Looks sharp. I don't know how big the 2100 is but a friend of mine has his 2600 in the stereo space. H ebought an after merket stereo and put the 2meter rig under it. If you didn't know any better you'd think Ford put it there. Just my thoughts.

I am about to install a FT-2600 in my F-150. What after market stereo did your friend install in his that allowed the 2600 to be install under it? I would like to do mine the same way.

Just read a thread about using 16ga. wire for an installation of a 50 watt 2100H - don't forget VOLTAGE DROP, I think for a run of that length 12 ga. would be better. Also the fuse should be at the battery end.
