Need Antenna help for Ford Econoline 150 Reply
by KD5TGN on September 23, 2002 Mail this to a friend!
Greetings all,
I am currently awaiting the arrival of an Icom IC-207H and was wondering what the current opinion of the "best" ant was for an old, cica 1984 Ford Econoline van? I want to be able to "get out" but on 2 meters don't expect to hit the next state. :)And I don't want to break the bank.

Thoughts and or suggestions?

Cheers,
Hos

I have a 2000 E-150 van and did not want to drill holes for antenna mounts. I am using an on-glass dualband antenna. I was able to mount it top center of the windshield (keeping in mind the manufacturers required setbacks from metal). The coax is simply tucked into the endge of the rigid headliner and routed towards the passenger side. The coax is then slid behind the plastic molding down to the bottom of the dash panel. From there is is tucked up under and routed to the center console.

Glass mounts work soso, but don't forget, if you mount it on the windshield make sure it is not in the wipers path.

A 1984 Ford van? I'd drill a hole right in the middle of the roof and use a good quality 5/8 wave.

Drilling a hole isn't a problem with this old van. :)
It's my running around, get stuck in the mud van!
But not being conversant with mobile ants, what qualifies as a "good quality" 5/8 wave?

I personally prefer Larsen. They are well made, most amateur distributors carry at least a token stock, and I've never had a bad one. I've busted a few, had a couple ripped off, even had one burn out because I exceded the 200 watts max power rating, but never one that failed.

Years ago, Antenna Specialists made similar antennas, but my most common complaint was solder joints which fialed. Larsen welds their's.

There has to be 50 different 2/220/440 antenns makers, and a lot of them are good antennas. Check the reviews section on this site for more info.

Thanks for the info! The new dual 5/8 works great and getting very good reports.

Now on to the next project... :)
