Car's speakers as external speaker Reply
by AB8OJ on September 27, 2002 Mail this to a friend!
OK, I read the article "Stupid Amateur Tricks 101", and now know not to use a cassette adapter to hear my mobile radio through the car's existing speakers. :-)

But that got me to thinking...has anyone tapped into their car's speaker system at a different point, to use them as external speakers for their rig? Any and all help would be most appreciated, as I have very limited space to mount an external speaker up front.

I read the comment about the cassette adapter and must say that's the first I've heard about this being a problem. I use a cassette adapter for this purpose, and have for several years, with zero problems, including transmitting with 200W on HF and 75W on VHF while the adapter's in place and operating.

Before you abandon the idea, try it, first with lower power and then, if there's no problem, increase power slowly until you're running all you can. Likely there will be no problems at all.

I suspect the fellow who had the problem also had a unique situation, or a uniquely bad car stereo system! The Blaupunkt system in my Volvo seems completely immune to this, and I've used the Sony "walkman car adapter" for years without issue.

Got the adapter and hooked it up. No problem at full power (50W), and it sounds just great! I do admit to holding my breath, though, as I nudged the power up. :-)
