I remember seeing an ad for a mobile radio that you can control with an HT. I don't remeber what brand name it was. Anyway, any help in tracking something like this down would be great. I would be very interested in purchasing something like this for my next radios

That would be Kenwood's Sky Command. Not all of their various radios have it. One thing to keep in mind, Sky Command HAS NOT been approved by the FCC. They are suppose to act on it soon, but don't hold your breath. Until they do, using 2 meters to control a remote station is illegal ! You have to use 440.

I guess that answers my question. my problem is although I can hear the repeater I like to talk on from where I work using my HT, they report that I'm a bit fuzzy. I would like to find a way to talk to the 2 meter repeater, using a modile to HT link. there is no real hurry though. I probably won't have the money to buy another radio for about 6 months or so.

That's commonly known as cross band repeating, and a number of dual band mobiles have this feature.
That actually works pretty well for simplex operating but has an inherent problem when trying to work through repeaters that way. The cross-banding mobile is only half duplex, and will remain keyed on the complementary band as long as there's a signal present. Which means, when you're HT is keyed, you are being repeated to the input of the repeater, which is what you want. But, when you unkey your HT the cross band repeater senses the repeater's carrier and won't unkey until the carrier goes away. You will have to wait until the squelch tail drops before you can transmit back with your HT. Doesn't sound like a big deal but it's cumbersome in practice. Sometimes you can compromise by only using the cross band repeater to transmit with, and receive the repeater with your HT. It can be readily used with repeaters that way, as long as you can adequately receive the repeater with just the HT. Cross band repeating is somewhat of a controversial topic (like autopatch used to be) but I think it's a very useful feature and one that could be expanded on feature-wise by the OEM's. The commercial 2-way field has had them for decades.

that sounds even better. so my search won't be so hard afterall.
as for waiting for the squelch tail to drop off, for me anyway that wouldn't be a problem, as I usually wait till then anyway.
so I would need a dual bander. that's good, as I was thinkingt of getting a dual or triband Mobile, and HT for my next radios anyway.

Perhaps I misunderstood your requirements, but I think Mark answered it correctly. Do yourself a favor, and reread the rules about crossband repeat.
The other issue that crops up has more to do with the way your repeater group operates, squelch tail or no. Sometimes, your radio will continue to transmit when you don't want it to, and there is no way to stop it if you're not near by. It might not get you into hot water, but you never know.

Thank you all for your help. With any luck, I should have a mobile radio capable of Xband repeat and a new HT for 70 cm

Yeah, I understand that the police have a system like that when they are away from their cars. the Car radio is a repeater to the main system.

I thought about that too, but the radio I selected is supposed to time out in case of continuous transmit, so that shouldn't be a problem.
