Where to put remote speaker in Acura TSX? Reply
by N8CD on May 22, 2006 Mail this to a friend!
I installed a Yaesu FT-90 with the remote separtion kit in my 2005 Acura TSX this weekend. The radio body is in the trunk, and I ran the cables forward under some carpet and then under the center console for power, mic, data (control head) and speaker. Although it took a lot of effort to fish the wires under the carpet between the rear seat base and the console, it's worked out pretty well. I'll take some pictures and do a brief "what to watch out for" guide if anyone else wants to do something similar on theirs.

I located the remote head in the console's flip up cubby lid, and ran a power cable through the firewall to the battery. The microphone comes up through the center console and rests in the "cell phone holder" compartment. When not in use, everything is hidden and looks great. The only hole I had to drill was a small hole in the console to get the microphone cable up into the cell phone holder.

I have a small (2.5" x 3" x 1" deep) remote speaker that I can't find a good place to mount that will be functional but won't look goofy. There is a perfect spot on the roof between the sunglasses holder and the sunroof, but I'm a little concerned about routing the wires. The car has side curtain airbags, so I'm reluctant to run the wire down the column between the front and rear doors or the column between the windshield and the front door. Anyone else found a good spot for the speaker, and if so, how did you run the wire to it?

I personally prefer the spot on the ceiling that you've identified. It's worth taking the time to route wires to get it there. Another spot I've had good success with is either underneath the ashtray, or anywhere underneath the dash pointed down towards the floor. They work suprisingly well there and are completely hidden. You could try several locations on a temporary basis until you find one you like well enough before you do anything permanent.

You ran the wires the hard way. The door sills on the Acura (and just about every other vehicle made) can easily be removed. Under the sills (on both sides) is a wiring trough large enough to run a pair of 1/0 cables and then some. While lots of sound shops do it the way you did, I find that the wires eventually work their way down into the sound deadening material, making them almost impossible to remove.

I have an Acura coupe, and I mounted the speaker right behind the center console. I have installed passive bandpass filters into the speaker, so this makes reaching the switches easy.

Personally, I don't like to mount anything that your head can hit in the event of a crash. While I could have mounted a speaker inside the sun glasses holder in the upper console, it would not be large enough for my tastes.

Here are a bunch of pictures you might want to look through (http://www.k0bg.com/gallery/Other-Installs) and there are more in my Installation article (http://www.k0bg.com).

I place mine between the seats where my shifter is. I have 2... one for the VHF/UHF and one for the HF. I keep them secured with velcrow so I can just rip them off if I need to remove them instead of screwing them down. I have also used FM modulators to feed the audio into the stereo system... I prefer being able to taylor the audio EQ on my system.. I never have a problem hearing evenweak stations over the road noise. The only issue is you have to use some sort of audio transformer to convert the audio impedence and to give a level of dc seperation so you dont get strange sounds from the rig. Also a RF choke to keep any RF from getting into the FM transmitter. Perhaps there is a comercial device that does this that I am unaware of but if you are cleaver you can make something that will work right. Cheers!

Get a blitzsafe aux adapter and route your audio through the stereo.

Provided of course, that you don't have anything else like an iPOD.

Speakers in cars....

This brings up a question. On a number of occasions, I have read here and other places that separate speakers for mobile rigs are preferred over using the built in speakers of the vehicle radio or sound system. I am not sure I understand why.

For example, in my mobile setup with my truck, I route the audio through the auxilliary input of my truck's sound system (now, that sounds funny, a truck sound system). This seems to work just fine, I have had no problems in copying or understanding any signal (or, noise) from my truck speakers.

I admit that my truck does indeed have an auxilliary input port (two of them in fact) and I must also admit that I did not bother doing the hard work, I paid the guys at CarToys (a mobile stereo, car phone, gps type of store) to do the install.

Yet, I do hear hams saying "No, I would never use the car radio speaker". Why not -- other than finding a way to do it.

if anyone is interested, I took a few pictures of how I ended up installing the FT-90 in my TSX. Hopefully it will give some ideas to someone else that is thinking about ways to do it:
