Kenwood 700A is deaf...

I have an old Kenwood TS-700A 2m all-mode rig that has a few issues. On FM, the radio transmits and receives just fine, no complaints there. However, the troubles begin on the other modes. On USB/LSB/AM/CW, there is no receive at all. No matter where the volume control is or where the RF gain is set, there's no noise at all. More on CW mode.. In addition to it not receiving, it will not transmit. I've tried multiple keys that work on other rigs, but they will not key the 700. I have both the instruction manual and service manual as well as the extra service bulletins from Kenwood, but I'm still stumped to the problem. Anyone have any thoughts? (other than junking it or taking it to a shop) Thanks to all!

Do you have the manual for the TS-700A?
Your first symptom sounds like you've got the rig squelched on SSB/CW. It shouldn't be. The squelch works on "all modes" but of course is really for FM use, and should be completely counterclockwise (OFF) for SSB and CW.
The issue regarding not transmitting on CW might be that you have no VOX on the TS-700A, so simply closing the key while the rig's in the CW mode won't do anything. You need to place the rig manually into the "transmit" position, then close the key and see what happens...

I agree, the squelch on these all-mode rigs have caught more than one ham by surprise.
Also on the CW issue, if its like anything else of the vintage, like my FT-221 or FT-620B, the radio doesn't have to have VOX and you don't have to manually put the radio into transmit. The Key jack on the back of the TS-700A as far as i know is a two conductor 1/4 jack, meaning its a MONO not STEREO jack, so if you are using a three contact stereo plug problems will arise!
The radio is put into transmit on the first closure of the key and stay in transmit until a set amount of time has passed. The relay delay setting controls how long the radio stays in TX after you send are done sending, if the radio drops out of transmit frequently while sending increse the delay.
Also, try cleaning the contact of the mode switches, my FT-221 didn't have any receive on USB until i cleaned the switches with some good contact cleaner.
Just my two cents worth...

HI STAN
THIS MAY SOUND DUMB BUT TRY CHECKING THE RELAY SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE TX OR RX.
IT COULD BE DIRTY OR JUST WORN OUT.
HOPE IT HELPS.
