IC-706mkIIg powers off on transmit

I've had my IC-706mk2G installed in my truck for about 4 years. After about a year of inactivity, I recently reconnected the remote control head to the radio and attempted to operate. The radio receives fine on all bands. When attempting to transmit, the radio power shuts down about 250 msec after keying the mic transmit button. This happens on all bands. It also happens with the control head mounted directly to the radio (thereby eliminating the separation cable as the problem).
Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone know how to troubleshoot it or fix it? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, and 73.
Mark

I would start with the power lead. If the radio comes back on when you release the key, that is most likely the problem. A lot of the cheap new leads have a problem with the pins losing contact. While holding the key down, wiggle the connections, especially if you have the pin type connector at the fuse connection.

Its a common problem due to RF getting into the control head wiring. Check the cable ground connection on the connection at the radio and the control head.

Thanks for your response. The radio does not come back on when I release the mic -- only after pressing the power-on button again. But I think you are on to something and will certainly check the power connections to the truck battery. I think a high impedance positive or ground connection might cause sufficient voltage drop at the radio on transmit to cause it to cut off.

Install a snap on choke to the remote wiring kit. I had the same problem.

This is just an idea. Is it possible that your radio is turning itself off due to terrible SWR? I believe this radio has that feature. You will hear find on receive but the instant you try to transmit, the SWR will reflect too much power back into the radio and it will turn itself off to protect the internal circuitry.
Good luck.

Given the time frame, I'd check the feed line and antenna, especially the "ground" side of the antenna. I'd borrow an antenna analyzer for this. Oh, check the rig into a dummy load too.

I would check all power connections for good clean connections. Used to have a 706 that would do this whenever I tried using it on a small 12 volt battery. Not enough amps flowing to make it happy.

I think that K4IKR is on the button.
Check the power lead connections and fuses.
The current being called for when you try to TX is causing the poor connection to go "open circuit" thus shutting down the rig. With the open circuit and very low power being used the "poor connection" cools down and "re-makes"... just enough contact to enable rx power only.
I have known glass fuses, the type that have a single wire strand soldered between the ends to come un-soldered and thus to be intermittant in passing power, and simmilar problems with the auto BLADE types.
Good luck.
