FL-53 Filter Reply
by KA0LDG on September 20, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I have a problem with my 703+ and am looking for some advice. I recently purchased a used FL-53A filter, and installed it this afternoon. When I select the filter while listening to an S-7 signal, I have to crank the volume all the way up just to barely hear the signal, and also the S meter drops to zero (yes I am exactly on the other stations freq). If I de-select the filter, I have to readjust the volume to normal. I have checked the solder joints and they look good, as do all the connections that are required to be removed to attach the filter. I also have selected the FL-53 filter in the setup menu and all other functions with the rig operate as normal. Thanks for the help in advance.

Two suggestions:

1-Have you gone into the initial setup menu and set the optional filter mode? Hold the 'lock' button down while turning the radio on to enter initial setup, and the filter setting should be item 22. I think if the radio thinks it has an SSB filter in there, your signal of interest would not be in the passband (I don't have an SSB filter so I'm not sure, but you should check).

2-Check that the 'IF Shift' knob is centred. I have a bad habit of knocking it off-center when I take the radio out of the backpack. With the narrow filter, you can shift the IF right out of the filter's passband without much movement, and you get something much like the symptoms you describe. Also the audio sounds very odd even when you crank the AF gain up.

Best luck.

Well I replaced the FL-53A with a filter from W4RT, and it works great. Obviously the FL-53A that I purchased used was bad. Moral to the story...I'll never buy a used filter (that was previously soldered) again - "buyer beware" comes to mind.
